Banana bread

Week 3 has been full of new and positive experiences along with challenges. On Saturday the volunteer service had a celebration of Maslenitsa (similar ideas behind pancake day) and Chinese New Year. I intended to bake banana bread for the occasion, but after purchasing items I got back to the hostel to discover that there was no oven.

The head of the volunteer service was determined to sample banana bread, so he went out and bought, yes purchased, a mini oven, so that I could bake banana bread in the office. It worked, but it was like baking with a box with two heating elements—the kind you’d find in a blow heater. It was a little well done in places, no charring, but frankly it’s a miracle the whole thing didn’t go up in flames. It tasted okay too. Perhaps it was the champanskia that washed it down or the kracniya vino (red wine).
